Following the intense rallies and campaigning, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party was making an impact in Karnataka with the public believing Prime Minister Narendra Modi would bring in a difference in the elections.

With the BJP looking towards forming a government following the results, let’s take a closer look as to what worked for the party -

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled 15 rallies in Karnataka but in the final leg of campaigning, the rallies increased to 21. The increase in the rallies seemed to have become the turning point. Also, Modi delivering speeches according to the region, addressing local needs is said to have worked in their favour.
  • PM Modi neutralized any local disadvantage with his clean image and asserted that his fight against corruption and black money included moves such as demonetization. He even hit out at Congress during a rally in Hubli that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were out on bail (in the National Herald case).
  • Modi mentioned as to how BJP workers were killed with no action against perpetrators under the Congress government. Referring to the move to grant Lingayats separate a religious status, Modi stated that Congress was out to divide Hindus.
  • With Dalit holding 16 percent population in Karnataka, the Dalits were a pivotal aspect of Siddaramaiah’s AHINDA (a Kannada acronym) social coalition of backward and minorities. Modi’s speeches included BJP’s focus on Dalits. Speaking about BJP’s commitment to BR Ambedkar and recognizing sites associated with the Dalit icon, the PM mentioned the welfare schemes which helped SCs most and the BJP government strengthening the SC/ST Act. Pointing out President Ram Nath Kovind being a Dalit leader, Modi spoke about how BJP enabled his election.
  • Modi projected the welfare and pro-poor initiatives which included gas connections, toilet construction, health benefits, housing for the poor, opening bank accounts. The PM claimed that these schemes addressed the core needs of the poor.
