nizamabadNizamabad: Major and Medium Irrigation Minister P Sudarshan Reddy directed the officials of the Irrigation Department to complete the modernization of Nizam Sagar canals by July end. They have to undertake repair works to the canals and irrigation tanks at various places across the district during the three-month period without fail, he said. The Minister was addressing a review meeting at Pragathi Bhavan (Collectorate) in the town. There are only three months left to complete the modernization works of the canals in the district. Nearly 75 per cent of the works were already completed. As many as 99 works worth Rs 6.86 cr in nine Assembly constituencies and 34 other works at a cost of Rs 3.14 cr at different places were taken up to prevent leakages to the canals, he said. Modernization works (repair works) on 34 irrigation tanks at various places in the district were progressing briskly and they have to be completed within three months, he instructed the irrigation officials. He said that crops were cultivated in about 7 lakh acres with the help of rain water and bore-wells last year. After the completion of repairs to tanks, the cultivable area under bore-wells and would be increased further during the current year, he hoped. The depth of irrigation tank would be increased at Kammarpalli to provide irrigation water to farmers in the mandal. Similar steps would be taken up in Morthad mandal also, he said. He asked the Joint Collector Harshavardhan to get indents from engineers for the supply of required quantities of sand and the contractors have to be supplied adequate quantities of sand to take up repair works to the tanks. District Collector Christina Z Chongthu, Engineer-in-Chief Narayana Reddy, Joint Collector Harshavardhan, Godavari Basin Commissioner Vijay Prakash and other engineers were present at the meeting.
