With the spin of technology weaving new and new gadgets day by day, people especially youngsters get hooked to these gadgets. Any new evolution in technology and youngsters are attracted to that technology that it sometimes turns into addiction.
In late nineties and in early millennium, when the black and white huge cell phones were introduced, people were hooked to the games in the new breed of phones. The ‘snake game’ was so popular that many youngsters engrossed themselves in playing the game.
As technology spawned in new age so did it transformed the cell phones. FM radio, camera etc were added in the second generation of phones and it hooked more and more people.,
With the advent of smart phones people from all age groups, especially the youth have plugged themselves in these smart phones. With so many options available in the phone one actually cannot resist hooking to these gadgets.
We see many people sitting in a group in restaurant and almost everyone fiddling with their smart phones. The sense of social bonding has been limited to just meet people in person and later they get hooked to their respective phones. Parents are much annoyed with the habit of their wards getting glued to the phones. Now youngsters can get rid of this habit and enjoy simple things in life, a company has developed an app called ‘Breakfree’ which will tell the user how much time he or she has spent on the phone.
According to the Breakfree website, a study shows that an average young adult checks his/her phone a whopping 110 times a day. That makes it once every 13 minutes. And for most people this peaks to once every 6 seconds in the evenings.
“Really helps you stay away from your phone. I was looking for a mobile de-addiction app since couple of months now. I didn't get the flexibility in other apps. This app is really very helpful,” says Ramiz Dalvi, young professional.
The app is designed in such a way that it will help the smart phone addicts to pursue a healthy digital lifestyle.
“The app reminds you every time you pick up your phone. I just loved this concept. It helped me to reduce my addiction. I was looking for an app just like this. The reminders truly help! One of my friends who suggested this app to me said it is an eye-opener. This app actually makes you realise that there is a life beyond Whatsapp, Viber, Facebook, Twitter, games and other misc apps. Overall a must have app for all those who use their phone's insanely,” Ravi Rapolu, software professional.
Breakfree app allows the user to measure which apps they use frequently. The app operates in the background and reads the usage pattern and it calculates real-time addiction score.
The app alerts the user when he/she makes too many phone calls or have been using too much of a particular app etc. With these alerts the user will know how much they are hooked to the phones and it helps them to slow down the usage. The app currently is available on android platform and received at 4.2/5 rating on play store. The developers are soon planning to launch the app for different platforms.
