Nalgonda: The presence of Congress members, who skipped the meeting on Thursday, ensured the election of Boddupalli Lakshmi as chairperson of Nalgonda Municipality and Burri Srinivas Reddy as vice-chairman. The party had bagged 22 of the 40 wards in the municipality, while other parties finished with 18 wards.

The Congress victory was made possible with local MLA Komatireddy Venkat Reddy summoning the 22 party councillors to Hyderabad and planned the successful election of Lakshmi. Reddy himself brought the councilors here. They ensured her unanimous election.

Following the Telangana Rashtra Samithi plan, the 18 winners in non-Congress wards backed the candidature of G Radhika, who had joined TRS. The pink party required three more councillors to win the chairman’s post. It tried to induce three Congress councillors but failed after Venkat Reddy took the councillors to Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, elections to Suryapet municipality, which were postponed on Thursday, could not be held because the councillors could not reach the office in time. RDO Naganna said a representation was made to the State Election Commission regarding the chairman’s poll.
