Telangana: High court seeks explanation on vehicle number plates

A plea by Rammohan Chowdary, a resident of Hyderabad, was dealt by the Bench as he challenged the GO issued by the government on July 17, asking all the vehicle owners to change their number plates from AP to TS through a process of re-registration.

Hyderabad: On Monday, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar of the state High Court granted one day time to the Telangana state government to clarify on what authority the government has asked the vehicle owners to go for a re-registration. It was also asked to explain about the adding of letters TS to their number plates in place of existing AP.

A plea by Rammohan Chowdary, a resident of Hyderabad, was dealt by the Bench as he challenged the GO issued by the government on July 17, asking all the vehicle owners to change their number plates from AP to TS through a process of re-registration.

Justice Sengupta said that if the state government has the power to order the same. And, if so, the state government is asked to show where the power was. The honourable justice wondered which law empowered the state government to do so.

While replying the counsel sought some time to answer this query and stated that it is only a preliminary notification and not yet finalised by the state. The Bench reserved the matter for Tuesday.
