Hyderabad: The Telganana government has taken a tough stand against the private engineering colleges that do not adhere to All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) norms.

More than half the colleges under the Osmania University region were conspicuously absent in the list released by the EAMCET Board. It meant that the government had literally weeded out these colleges.

A total of 315 colleges applied for renewal of affiliation, of which only 141 colleges were granted affiliation in Telangana State under OU region. Not just with engineering, even pharmacy colleges had to face the same wrath, only 61 out of 146 colleges got renewal under OU region.

Every year it is a mandatory for every college in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states to go for the renewal of affiliation. Recently JNTU-Hyderabad, Andhra University and Sri Venkatwara University conducted inspection of colleges for renewal of affiliation under their regions.

The Telangana government made it clear that the colleges which do not follow AICTE norms would face the axe. With the government denying permission to 175 colleges in the State, there would be only 85,455 seats out of total 1,84,575 engineering seats under OU region, while 10,910 pharmacy seats are only available now out of total 18,564. Of 212 colleges that had applied for renewal under Andhra University region in Andhra Pradesh, as many as 206 colleges were given affiliation and out of 85 pharmacy colleges, as many as 75 now could get renewel of affiliation. Under Sri Venkateswara University, as many as 113 engineering colleges were given affiliation out of 118 colleges for the current academic year, whereas 36 colleges out of 37 Pharmacy colleges got their re-affiliation under SVU.
