Hyderabad: Aiming to bring in complete transparency into various schemes designed for poorer sections, the Telangana Government is mulling to issue fresh pension and ration cards from November.

The Cabinet sub-committee chaired by Civil Supplies Minister Etela Rajender emphasised on issuing new cards in place of the existing ones to ensure zero pilferage. The committee also decided to take up a widespread campaign in all panchayats and municipalities and organise ward level meetings to sensitise people on the need to take up the exercise for issuing new ration cards. Later talking to media, the minister said applications would be invited from eligible beneficiaries of PDS and pension schemes till October 15. Information submitted in applications would be compared with the data collected during the Comprehensive Household Survey and later field level inspection would be taken up to ascertain whether the applicant falls under the BPL category or not.

The list of beneficiaries would be put up in panchayat offices and municipalities besides offices of concerned government departments and objections would be invited. A final list would be prepared afterwards based on which pension and ration cards would be given. The committee in principle agreed to enhance the quantity of rice supplied under Public Distribution System (PDS) from the present 20 kg to 30 kg per family per month for BPL families. The committee is also of the opinion that the government should not distribute the rice free to the beneficiaries. Instead it should be supplied at Rs 3 a kg.

The meeting was attended by Ministers T Harish Rao, K Taraka- rama Rao, G Jagadish Reddy, P Mahender Reddy, Jogu Ramanna and IAS officials Raymond Peter and C Parthasarathi.
