Hyderabad: Even more than 34 hours after baby Girija fell into the open borewell in Rangareddy district's Manchala village, the authorities have not been able to rescue her.

Though the district authorities including NDRF officials have been making best efforts, they are yet to reach out to her. The excavation and digging a parallel tunnel works hit a road block as they have hit a rock and unless that rock was broken they cannot reach to the depth where the girl is stuck.

According to officials the rock is 4-feet wide and 4-feet long and men have been sent inside to cut the rock and hence it was taking more time. A team of doctors have been deployed on the spot and oxygen is continuously being supplied inside the tunnel to help keep Girija alive.

Around half-a-dozen excavators, dozens more support vehicles and a score of people are at the village, 13 km away from Ibrahimpatnam.

Within hours of the tragedy, the administration swung into action. The Revenue Department organised the logistics, including diesel for the excavators – the JCB Front-End Loaders were pressed into service to dig a parallel trench in their bid to reach the girl who was suspected to be trapped between 40 to 45 feet deep inside the earth.

The operation has the active involvement of those from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) too. The Emergency Management Research Institute ambulance (108) is continuously pumping in oxygen, said Joint Collector-II (Ranga Reddy), M.V. Reddy

“Images from the camera did not show the girl but we believe she must be somewhere out of the reach of the camera’s focus. We strongly hope that Girija must be stuck there. The oxygen that has been continuously pumped in would, we hope, keep her alive. We keep our fingers crossed and praying God as we are continuing our work,” Reddy said.
