Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has decided to carry out a total revamp of the hospital administration in the State. It wants to reduce the burden on the government hospitals in Hyderabad which are overcrowded.

Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister T Rajaiah, who chaired a review meeting on the Health and Medical Education department on Wednesday, said people rush to Hyderabad for medical care as successive governments had failed to strengthen rural health care in area hospitals, Community Health Centres and PHCs.

He said the TS government would now revamp the health services and infrastructure facilities at village, mandal and district level so that people would not have to come all the way to Hyderabad.

The Deputy CM said during his visit to Niloufer Children’s hospital on Tuesday he found the bed strength was 30, while there was demand for 250 beds. Government hospitals in the city have a combined out-patient staff strength of 500. To meet the heavy rush, they need about 1,500 out-patient staff. If the facilities at district hospitals and area hospitals were improved, pressure on the city hospitals would be less, he said.

The Minister further added: “A Revolving fund of Rs 113 crore will be allocated to the Hospital Development Society, which will be primarily used to improve basic infrastructure, bring in more medical equipment and raise the staff strength.”

Out-patient block at Nims, Ghatkesar would be inaugurated soon by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. The vacant RMO posts at Gandhi and Koti Maternity hospitals would also be filled soon, he informed.

The Deputy CM announced that 2,000 posts of second ANM (Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife), which are lying vacant in PHCs under the National Health Mission and ASHA workers, would also be filled up, he said.

As per Medical Council of India (MCI) norms, Rs 66.60 crore has been released to Gandhi, Kakatiya and Osmania Medical colleges as also to the government medical college at Nizamabad.

He said Centre would release Rs 150 crore for super-speciality hospitals in Warangal and Adilabad. The land acquisition has been done and the Deputy CM will attend a meeting convened by Union Health Minister, Harshavardhan, on October 20.

The Minister revealed that his government plans to revamp 108 and 104 and was ready to take "tough decisions". He faulted the GVK group for the recent fiasco and added the services would be renamed and if needed, they would be handed over to some other corporate service-provider.
