City-based NGO says it won’t serve the purpose and absolutely it is not a solution to the problem

Hyderabad: In a strong reaction to the reports that the Chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW) Lalitha Kumaramangalam had sought legalisation of prostitution in the country, Dr Sunitha Krishnan, general secretary of a NGO Prajwala, on Tuesday said legalisation was no solution to the problem.
In an open letter, a copy of which had been sent to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sunitha said legalising prostitution will be of absolutely no help in bringing it down. She said even after legalising prostitution in countries like Netherlands and Australia there has been no decrease in crime against women or children.
She said after prostitution was legalised in Netherlands it was estimated that between 1996 and 2001 the number of children who took to prostitution increased by over 300 per cent. Even trafficking of children from other countries was taking place.
She said prostitution was controlled by the procurer or the pimps and the sex workers have little or no stake in their earnings. Sunitha suggested the NCW to make buying sex an offence and buying sex from a child a grave offence. This would reduce the demand and there would be lesser women and children being inducted into the trade.
