Irrigation Minister Harish Rao conducted a video-conference with the District Collectors on restoration of tanks. He held a district-wise review on the progress of survey of tanks and formulating proposals.

Answering to the Minister over the video-conference, Ilambarithi said out of 4,821 tanks in the district, it has been decided to take up restoration works of 960 tanks in the first phase.

Harish Rao pointed out that there were 45,000 minor water sources in the State. By ensuring restoration of these water resources, 265 tmc of water can be stored. The restoration works would be taken up in different phases during the next five years. It has been decided to take up restoration works of 9,000 tanks in the State this year.

He asked the Collectors to involve local people and people’s representatives in the works. He said intensive campaigning should be taken up to create awareness among farmers. Meetings should be conducted at mandal-level.

The Minister said the mud removed from tanks can be utilised by farmers in their fields.

He opined that this would help farmers secure an additional yield of 30 per cent. He called upon the agriculture officers to educate the farmers that by adopting this measure the utilisation of fertilisers could be brought down.

He said the selection of tanks should be made in such a manner so that the people derive maximum benefit. The objective is to store maximum water during rainy season.
