Hyderabad: Mayor Majid Hussain said that the Rs 5-a-meal scheme would be launched in all government hospitals under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. He was launching the Rs 5 food scheme in NIMS Government Hospital on Sunday.

The Mayor added that the Centre had appreciated the various innovative schemes launched by the GHMC for the benefit of the city. Ramchandra Reddy said that the GHMC was striving hard for the development of the city and appreciated the efforts made by the civic body to cater to the needs of the poor.

GHMC had allocated Rs 11 crore from its budget for the subsidised food scheme which would be launched in 50 centres across the city. So far, the scheme is functioning in 16 centres providing food to about 5,500 people every day. “It would be launched in another 25 centres in a couple of weeks,” said Somesh Kumar.

Night shelter to patient’s attendants who come from different places would be provided in all government hospitals. Beds, toilets and lockers would also be provided to them. The GHMC’s standing committee has approved the project and tenders would be called soon.
