Hyderabad: In order to provide in-time help to women in distress, the Telangana State government is planning to launch a round-the-clock helpline service ‘181’ on the lines of Gujarat. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao reviewed the reports submitted by the committee headed by Poonam Malakondaiah on Thursday at the Secretariat.

Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma, DGP Anurag Sharma, Additional CP (Crime) Swati Lakra, ADGP (CID) Charu Sinha, Home Secretary Soumaya Mishra, and other higher officials from various departments attended the meeting. The Chief Minister instructed them to make women's safety a top priority in Telangana. In this regard, he said that 33 per cent reservation for women in police department would be examined. The free 24x7 helpline, ‘181’, is a toll-free number to support women in distress and is accessible through any mobile or landline. Any woman could access ‘181’ for the purpose of counselling, guidance, information and also for the rescue in various threatening situations including domestic violence, KCR said. The Committee which was constituted to look into the problems of security and safety faced by women at workplaces and elsewhere, presented its report. “Hotspots such as bus stations, hostels, cinema theatres, colleges where women encountered problems like eve-teasing and har. Several cases of eve-teasing were reported in areas like Koti, Mehdipatnam and Secunderabad areas.

Eve-teasers had been identified and photos were also taken. After taking their fingerprints and counselling, they were released. Parents of eve-teasers and school authorities were issued letters in that regard,” Poonam reported. All these things came up for discussion at Thursday’s meeting and it was decided to adopt the best practices. The meeting also discussed the effective implementation of pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic techniques.
