Hyderabad: Is Hyderabad the gutka capital of Telangana? If the experience of the former FAPCCI president Omprakash Tibrewala is any indication, it appears so. The FAPCCI which recently took up Swachch Bharat programme found that maximum garbage in Hyderabad was of gutka packets.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tibrewal said that he was shocked that despite gutka being banned in Hyderabad, there is no reduction in its addiction.
Lakhs of people are purchasing it at 4 times the price and small shopkeepers like panwallas are selling it under the very nose of police. “I have seen police constables also using gutka. Gutka whether with tobacco or without tobacco have become dangerous and is not only adding to garbage on our streets but it has become greatest source of spoiling the health of lakhs of students and other people,” he said. He called for a blanket ban on the manufacturing of gutka. Gutka addiction is more dangerous than cigarettes, he noted.
