Hyderabad: If recommendations of Telangana Housing Department are okayed by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, the beneficiaries of 2-bedroom housing scheme will have no choice but to pay a few extra bucks from their pocket.According to fresh estimates given by Telangana Housing Department, unit cost has increased to Rs 4.61 lakh. The department is proposing construction of houses of 490 sq ft plinth area in 125 sq yards for each 2-bedroom independent house.

Addressing a press meet here on Monday, Housing Minister Indrakaran Reddy stated that they had drawn plans to build 20 independent houses in one acre. When TRS announced its free-housing scheme before elections, the unit cost for each 2 BHK house was estimated at Rs 3.5 lakh. However, due to price escalation of raw materials and other factors, unit cost has now increased to Rs 4.61 lakh.

This is the final price after reducing the plinth area to 490 sq ft from the previously announced 550 sq ft. Indrakaran explained that each beneficiary should bear the additional burden, which is likely to be in the range of Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000. He further said that an additional cost of Rs 1 lakh on each unit would be incurred for development of colonies like laying of road, power, drainage and drinking water lines. However, these charges would be borne entirely by the government, he added.

Indrakaran said they would fix a target of building one to two lakh houses every year for the next five years. He stressed on a thorough survey by the Housing Department to identify the exact number of poor beneficiaries in all districts. Although some surveys had indicated this figure may be in the range of 14 to 22 lakh, there was no accuracy attached to them, he felt.
