Mahabubnagar: In a tragic incident, a resident of the town in Kirisetting Colony, Chennakesavulu, committed suicide on Friday by jumping before a train along with his two-year-old son. He took the extreme step to end his life after local government hospital staff demanded ‘mamool’ following the birth of his son.

Chennakesavulu left a suicide note alleging that hospital superintendent Samuel was not helpful in solving his problem over the payment of bribe to the staff. In desperation, he took a plunge in front of Sampark Kranthi Express in Veerannapet railway station.

District Collector Sridevi, who took a serious view of the episode, visited the hospital and consoled Nagalakshmi, wife of Chennakesavulu. Patients in the hospital poured out their woes to the Collector about their bitter experiences. The patients alleged that they were forced to pay bribes ranging from Rs.500 to 1,000 to the hospital staff to secure their attention. The Collector ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The State government viewed the incident seriously and directed the district administration to take action. In a twist to the unfortunate incident, Samuel told the media that Chennakesavulu had indeed met him regarding his complaint over payment of bribe to the hospital staff.

He had insisted on a written complaint for taking action against his subordinates. The superintendent denied that the staff had demanded mamool from Chennakesavulu.
