Adilabad: Brewing of illicit liquor has become rampant in several mandals of the district. The Excise officials are keeping silent by allegedly accepting bribes regularly from the people who are brewing illicit liquor. Earlier, illicit liquor was usually brewed in abandoned places and far away from villages.

Now, businessmen are brewing illicit liquor near their houses in villages. Brewing illicit liquor has become easy with the availability of black jaggery and sugar candy in shops. People belonging to poor and middle classes in villages are purchasing illicit liquor as it is cheaper. In villages, one litre of this liquor is sold at Rs 50. It is being sold at Rs 150 per litre in the industrial towns like Mancherial, Srirampur, Mandamarri, Bellampalli and Ramakrishnapur.

Businessmen are smuggling illicit liquor in broad daylight on scooters, autos and jeeps by befriending Excise officials. Even the police officials are turning a blind eye on illicit liquor smuggling. People are indulging in disputes at homes and in villages after consuming illicit liquor. District people, especially women, request the higher officials to destroy illicit liquor brewing centres.
