Hyderabad: Though the Supreme Court of India ruled that transgenders would be recognised on official documents under a separate ‘third gender’ category, the community still faces police harassment and discrimination. There were as many as 40 reported anti-trans attacks in Hyderabad in 2014, which included as many as eight murders, four gang rapes and seven acid attacks.
“More than 12 major incidents took place in the city excluding stray incidents between September and December of last year. FIRs have been registered at Gopalpuram, Madhapur and Sanathnagar police stations respectively but there is hardly any progress. The FIR, which was lodged at Sanathnagar police station on October 30 of last year, has no details at all. We are not even sure whether it has been further probed or ended up in the dustbin,” Advocate and member of Hyderabad Feminist Greeshma Rai said adding that Madhapur inspector K Narsimlu did not entertain the complaints of trans while they were attacked by miscreants but arrogantly said “he will not believe any version of transgender because in all probability they lie through their teeth”.
The Telangana Hijra Transgender Samithi (THTS) said more anti-trans attacks go unreported every day and more than 80 per cent of transgender had attempted suicide.
According to Gaystarnews, transgender population is said to be nearly 5 lakh who filled out census papers but activists say that the real number may be far higher. “How many trans must die before the Telangana government takes its responsibility? Last month, the KPHB police who are investigating Pravalika’s death stripped and beat up a HIV positive trans woman on the pretext of interrogation endangering her life. Despite bringing this to the notice of Cyberabad CP, atrocities against trans did not come down,” trans member Bittu Karthik said.
“A rowdy-sheeter, who attacked and robbed nearly 20 hijras in ten incidents, is still on the run. Kukatpally, Hi-Tec city, Balanagar, Jubilee Hills, Fatehnagar and Indira Nagar are some of the hotspots where he attacked the hijras,” the lawyer said.
Despite several attempts to contact DCP (Madhapur) L Karthikeya, the officer was not available for comment. He preferred to remain silent even as atrocities against trans continue to rise.
