New Delhi: The Centre introduced a Bill to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 in order to increase the number of MLC seats in the residuary Andhra Pradesh from the existing 50 to 58. But Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MP Vinod Kumar protested against the Bill questioning why the Centre was not taking grievances of Telangana into account and moving the Bill unilaterally without consulting Telangana.

The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary and the motion was adopted. Vinod Kumar reasoned that any amendment to this Act had to be sent to the respective State legislatures in order to ascertain the States’ views. He said that the TRS was not opposing the increase of seats in Andhra Pradesh but the Centre was not consulting while dealing with unresolved issues.

He said, “Seven mandals were removed from the State of Telangana and were merged with Andhra Pradesh. Till today, our State is giving electricity to those seven mandals where the major population is tribals.” Vinod Kumar’s arguments were supported by TMC MP Prof Saugata Roy opposing the Bill under the Rule 72(1) of the Rules of Procedure, telling that it was a piecemeal legislation. He said, “There is no urgency in the matter. I do not really know as to why the government has come up with this. I object to the introduction of the Bill on the ground that it is a piecemeal and not a well-thought out legislation.”
