The decision of Telangana government to buy new Fortune cars for the district Collectors and Joint Collectors has started a fresh controversy. A Government Order No.160 issued by the Revenue department has released Rs.5.25 crore for purchasing 21 Fortune vehicles.

The Chief Minister's Office has sent a note about purchasing of Fortune vehicles on March 21. According to this order, in a meeting on December 2014 Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had promised the collectors and joint collectors that the government would give Fortune vehicles.

There is no dispute providing vehicles for Collectors and Joint Collectors because they are disseminating government development, welfare programmes into the public. It is purely a government choice that a certain officer uses a particular vehicle for visiting districts. A few senior IAS officials criticized this decision. “Collectors and Joint collectors are like a bridge between public and government.
A rule says that one should bring down administrative expenditure and serve people. Are these vehicles necessary for the welfare state?” they argued.
CM K.Chandrashekar Rao has been using nine Fortune cars in his convoy, which are built with bullet-proof and costs Rs 4 crore. Previously, former Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy used black colour Fortune vehicles. With his colour astrology, KCR put aside black Fortunes vehicles and bought new white colour Fortune vehicles. Few ministers have been using old Fortune vehicles.
The Chief Secretary has used 2013 model Toyota Altis and Honda city car, the cost of these vehicles below is Rs 12 lakh. Additional Chief Secretaries and Secretaries are using Innova, Honda City, Maruthi Swift desire vehicles. Interestingly few Cabinet Ministers, Cabinet Secretaries and Advisors are also using Innova vehicles. The State High Court Chief Justice and other judges are also using Toyota and Honda City cars. Recently a GO issued for purchasing vehicles for Telangana Public Service Commission Chairman and its Secretary became controversial.
