Hyderabad: IT Minister K T Ramarao on Thursday launched free wi-fi service by making a first call to Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and spoke to him for five minutes. Inaugurating the free wi-fi services in Hyderabad, the IT minister said the service will be expanded soon in the twin cities. The facility is now available at Lumbini Park, Tank Bund, Necklace Road and adjoining areas up to 10-km radius. Tourist can enjoy this free service with a speed of 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps. The free wi-fi service at Hussainsagar can be used by 1,800 to 2,500 people at a time for first half-an-hour.

After free usage, a customer can pay Rs 30, Rs 50, Rs 90 and Rs 150 for a validity of 30, 60, 120 minutes and one day, respectively. Hyderabad became the first city in the south zone to sport a BSNL wi-fi. The wi-fi hotspots will initially cover 30 places in Hyderabad, but in 2 to 3 years will be available across all other major cities of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. BSNL plans to commit about Rs 500 crore for the service in the region. BSNL and Quad-Gen are collaborating with Telangana government in this initiative.

Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The Prime Minister has said India should be digitally empowered and for this purpose, I seek the state governments’ cooperation in realising PM’s dream." The minister added that the next wi-fi destination will be Taj Mahal. BSNL CMD Anupam Srivastava said the Union Government was planning to invest Rs 7,000 crore over 2-3 years to provide wi-fi services in major cities and tourist destinations across the country.

Speaking later, KTR said that his government would connect every household in Telangana with optical fibre cable (OFC) network in the next four years. This would enable them to avail phone, net and cable connections easily, he added. He said that OFC cables would be laid out parallel in ten districts while laying out 80,000 km of pipeline for drinking water project. “This idea touched upon us and we decided to use same trenches for laying cables,” he stated.
