Hyderabad: The NHRC expressed dissatisfaction over Telangana Police for not furnishing sufficient details relating to the Aler encounter in which five undertrial prisoners were killed in an alleged police encounter on April 7. A few reports which were presented before the Commission chairperson, KG Balakrishnan and its members by Warangal IG Naveen Chand raised suspicion as they were not specific to the Aler incident and the circumstantial evidences do not support the police theory.

The IG maintained that the five undertrials were notorious criminals and killed several policemen in the past and the encounter was a genuine one to which the NHRC members queried whether the objective of the police was to kill them intentionally as they attacked jail wardens and cops in the past. Raising suspicion over the intention of police, the NHRC during its hearing on the case directed the Telangana Police to furnish post-mortem, forensic and magisterial inquiry report on the encounter in ten days.

The Commission will decide the future course of action after receipt of those reports. Mohammed Ahmed, father of undertrial Viquaurrdin also submitted a petition before the Commission seeking an independent probe into the matter. Several prominent Muslim organisations have submitted separate memorandums seeking the intervention of the Commission. The IG brought to the notice of the Commission that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by police being headed by IG (Personnel) Sandeep Shandilya.
