Hyderabad: Basic facilities such as water and sanitation in Telangana are so lacking that even the VIP constituencies are facing severe crises, according to a study. A Constituency-wise Analysis of Drinking Water and Sanitation conditions in Telangana released on Thursday by the division of child studies, Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) indicates that the Gajwel constituency represented by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao ranks 78 among the 119 constituencies and only 40 percent of the households here has water connections.
The Siddipet constituency, which was earlier represented by KCR and now by Irrigation minister T Harish Rao, ranks 43 with only 59.05 percent households having drinking water connections. The Nagarjuna Sagar constituency in Nalgonda district represented by leader of Opposition K Jana Reddy is one among the lowest.
It is rated at 102 among the 119 Assembly constituencies and has water connections in only 26.72 percent households. The Huzurnagar constituency represented by TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy is slightly better as it ranks 97 with 31.67 percent households having drinking water connections. Similarly, the Sircilla constituency represented by state IT and Panchayati Raj Minister KT Rama Rao ranks 45.
According to the study conducted by the CESS and sponsored by the UNICEF(United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund), 46 percent of Telangana households do not have access to drinking water and 48 percent households do not have toilet facility.
Telangana has 84 lakh households out of which only 38.50 lakh households have drinking water availability and percentage-wise this works out to 54 percent. Similarly, only 40 lakh households have the toilet facility, that is, 48 percent households have no facility of lavatory.
According to Prof Vijay Kumar, who heads DCS (Division for Child Studies), the report essentially captured mandal-wise data of all the districts showing which areas require more efforts. Lowest performing districts both in terms of drinking water facility and availability of lavatory are – Mahbubnagar and Adilabad districts, while Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts are among the best performing districts.
