At present, this weather system is giving heavy to very heavy rain over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the southern coast of Odisha. In the last 24 hours, Kakinada received 175 mm of rain.

Hyderabad: A well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal near northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coast is expected to intensify further into a depression anytime soon. At present, this weather system is giving heavy to very heavy rain over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the southern coast of Odisha. In the last 24 hours, Kakinada received 175 mm of rain.


Visakhapatnam recorded 96 mm of rain and Kalingapatnam observed 52 mm of rain. While intensifying, this system will gradually move inland and start affecting the interior parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during the next 24 hours. Khammam district hit a record high in the State with an excess rainfall of 274.53 per cent on the basis of cumulative rainfall received from June 1 to June 20 this year.

Incidentally, all the 10 districts have recorded excess rainfall compared to normal rainfall during this period. For the first time in the recent years, all the mandals in Khammam district have received excess rainfall ranging between 111 per cent and 515 per cent. Dammapet mandal witnessed a highest rainfall of 150.8 mm in the last 24 hours.


Warangal district, which registered 278.2 mm rainfall in the last 20 days, stood second in the State with an excessive rainfall of 189.49 per cent. Several low-level causeways in Wajedu, Venkatapuram, Cherla and Dummugudem mandals in the district came under a sheet of floodwaters cutting off road link to at least 30 villages.


In Andhra Pradesh, traffic was affected on Rajahmundry-Bhadrachalam, and Bhadrachalam-Konta (Chhattisgarh) due to overflowing of several rivulets and tributaries. At Parnasala, 44 km from Bhadrachalam, is under a sheet of water due to the overflowing of Sitavagu.


In Warangal district, with huge inflows coming in, the water level of Pakala tank had reached 15 ft. The total water level of the tank is 30 ft. Elsewhere in Govindaraopet mandal, the water level in Gundlavagu project has reached its full capacity. Mangapet and Eturnagaram mandals received highest rainfall in the last 24 hours with 59.2 mm and 58.2 mm respectively.


Moderate rain affected life in Hyderabad on Saturday, while heavy rains have been lashing Andhra Pradesh. A tribal block in Visakhapatnam district recorded 6.6 cm rainfall till afternoon. In Vijayawada, people living on Indrakeeladri hill slopes were evacuated as a precautionary measure. All areas in the city were inundated. East and West Godavari districts had recorded heavy rains.


Two boats with 15 fishermen (seven in one and eight in the other) went missing in Bay of Bengal at Gilakaladindi near Machilipatnam. Social Welfare Minister R Kishore Babu said aerial search would be carried out once the rain stops.
