Warangal: In spite of the promise made by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, housing for all slum-dwellers in Warangal city still remains a dream as there is no forward movement on the ground. The colonies stay as they were in the past. It was exactly six months since KCR sprang a surprise on the slum-dwellers by visiting Pragathi Nagar, Deendayal Nagar, Jithender Nagar, Bhagat Singh Nagar and other slums in the city and assured them that double bed room houses would be built within five months.

After visiting several slums in the city, The Hans India found that there is no progress towards the implementation of the plan. While the ruling party leaders accuse their Left party counterparts of creating hurdles for G+1 houses by misleading the slum-dwellers. But the Left party leaders denied it as baseless.

While attributing the delay to the land conversion process, MLA D Vinay Bhaskar told The Hans India on Wednesday, “In the first phase, the government will take up the construction at Ambedkarnagar in Hanamkonda and at SR Nagar in Warangal. In all, the government will construct 2,000 houses for the poor living in slums.” According to sources, a total of 592 houses would be built at Ambedkar Nagar and 792 in SR Nagar at a cost of Rs 5.04 lakh per each house.

Responding to a query from this newspaper, the Housing project director J Lakshman said, “As of now, our department did not get any orders from the government for the construction of houses.” Tahera Begum and Md. Nayeemuddin couple said that they have been waiting for the project to be launched. On the issue of pattas not being distributed to slum-dwellers, the CPI (M) district secretary Sarampally Vasudeva Reddy questioned the rationale behind government’s insistence on constructing G+1 or G+2 or G+3 houses when most of these people are in possession of just about 60 sq. yards.

Meanwhile, Pragathi Slum Samakya women of Pragathi Nagar appealed to government to provide basic amenities such as drinking water supply and internal roads at least before they actually take up the construction of houses. With the reports of the Chief Minister embarking on a two-day to Warangal on Thursday, the slum-dwellers are planning to meet him on the issue.
