Hyderabad: The municipal workers’ JAC and 10 left-wing parties on Thursday night rejected the decision of Telangana government to hike their salaries of municipal sweepers and drivers by 47 per cent. The left parties and the workers’ JAC have decided to go ahead with the bandh.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, after a meeting with officials late on Thursday, announced a big hike of 47.05 per cent in salaries of sweepers and drivers working in GHMC sanitation wing. The revised salaries would come into effect from July. This would mean that sweepers would be getting Rs 12,500 as against the existing salary of Rs 8,500. Drivers would be paid Rs 15,000 as against Rs 10,200. It may be mentioned here that GHMC sanitation staff commenced their strike on July 6.

This hike is higher when compared to hike given to the government employees (43%) and RTC staff (44%). However, the announcement comes with a condition that the hike would be applicable only to those who had joined duties. The Chief Minister directed the GHMC commissioner to suspend all those who did not join duties till Thursday.

Rao also directed officials to file criminal cases against those collecting Rs 1,000 from each sweeper working in the sanitation department as commission. The workers JAC and the left-wing parties, which have been strongly supporting the strike, have expressed their unhappiness over the conditional and partial announcement.

The left-wing party leaders, who held an emergency meeting at Makdhoom Bhavan, decided to go ahead with the bandh. CPI(M) state secretary B Venkat informed The Hans India that the strike would continue till the government agrees to hike the wages of workers in other municipalities. He was highly critical of the government for trying to divide and rule.

There are about 30,000 workers under GHMC limits while 40,000 in municipalities. Congress, TDP, YSRCP and other parties have extended their support to the bandh. The left party leaders said that from day one the government has been trying to adopt divide-and-rule policy.

In the first stage, the TRS workers’ union, which did not participate in the strike, announced that it was calling off the strike. In the second stage, the government threatened that they would remove the workers from their jobs. Later, it said that the GHMC would deploy police and army and would make alternate arrangements to get the garbage cleared.

Now, it was dividing the workers into GHMC and non-GHMC and says that the new salary structure would be applicable to only those who joined duty by Thursday. Normally, the government not only gives a hike but also withdraws all the cases registered against the striking employees. The JAC and leaders feel that in this case the government was trying to target some of the union leaders. The TRS government has forgotten the promises it had made before elections said the left party leaders.
