Hyderabad: Citing financial constraints as the main reason, the local bodies in Telangana told the State government that they were not in a position to hike the salaries of over 14,000 municipal workers in various municipalities, corporations and Nagar Panchayats.

The governing councils of all the local bodies have expressed their inability to hike the wages of sanitation employees. According to government sources, local bodies cited financial constraints as the main reason. With limited revenue sources, it is becoming increasingly difficult for local bodies to even pay electricity bills.

Paying the existing wages is also becoming a problem. Therefore, giving a hike to sanitation staff, akin to GHMC, was just not possible at this juncture, they told the department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development. They however said that if the government agrees to hike Property Tax which has been pending for long, they can consider some hike. The last tax revision was done in 2006.

It may be mentioned here that sanitation staff, especially the sweepers, were being paid Rs 8,300 in municipalities, whereas in nagar panchayats it was Rs 7,300. While in GHMC, sanitation employees were getting Rs 8,500 as salary which is now Rs 12,500 after the Chief Minister announced the hike. According to Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) officials, increasing salary on par with GHMC staff was almost ruled out considering the present position of the local bodies.
