PRANAHITA-CHEVELLA PROJECT
Senior party leader and MP Palvai Govardhan Reddy comes down heavily on Congress leaders for taking stand against State government on the issue
Hyderabad: Even as the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) took strong stand against the government decision to change the design of Pranahita-Chevella project recently, senior leaders in the party criticised the haste with which the party men opposed the project without having proper knowledge.
During the Congress Legislature Party meeting held on the Assembly premises, the contentious subject took almost half of the time. The TPCC leaders, who have maintained a stance against the government for taking up the project at Kaleshwaram rather than Tummuddi Hatti, received strong criticism from none other than the party MP, Palvai Govardhan Reddy on Sunday.
He, who returned from ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, strongly criticised fellow Congress leaders for speaking on the issue without proper research. The Lok Sabha MP, who is also member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources, held that the current design was ‘not viable’ and ‘may not get national status’.
He said that he was not against the government for taking up project at Tummuddi Hatti or Kaleshwaram, but was supporting change in design as the current design would only provide 120 tmc ft of water. “Rather than speaking on the subject, we must first have proper knowledge. We must organise a seminar for discussion on the issue by inviting experts,” he said to his party men.
On the other hand, he also held that the existing design was prepared for providing benefit to the contractors from AP. The project had already consumed Rs 450 crore, he said and called upon the Chief Minister to invite all parties for discussion, along with experts on the subject before taking a final decision on the project.
After a brainstorming session on the subject, some Congress leaders agreed to his contention, but most of them felt that the party should maintain its stance as the political opponent of the ruling TRS and for strategic reasons. Govardhan Reddy’s reaction comes in the backdrop of party leaders regularly appearing in front of the media questioning the intentions of the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on this project.
Interestingly, the TPCC has recently invited experts including Nainala Govardhan, convenor, Jala Sadhana Samithi, Venkata Ranga Reddy, former Engineer-in-Chief (Irrigation) and D Narsimha Reddy, noted environmentalist to Gandhi Bhavan.
