The infighting within the Warangal District Congress Committee and lack of a powerful local candidate who can take on the TRS, the Congress high command is likely to finalise the name of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as the party’s official candidate.

Hyderabad: The infighting within the Warangal District Congress Committee and lack of a powerful local candidate who can take on the TRS, the Congress high command is likely to finalise the name of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as the party’s official candidate.
The party high command, according to sources, is of the opinion that Meira Kumar would be the best choice for various reasons and if she was fielded, even the TRS may think of fielding a relatively weak candidate against her.Kumar, apart from being an SC candidate, is also the daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram and has also played an important role during the passing of the AP State Reorganisation Act.
Party Warangal district in-charge Jai Prakash Rapolu on Wednesday said they would oppose tooth and nail if the party decided to give the ticket to anyone from outside the district. He said several people like former MPs S Rajaiah, Sarvey Satyanaraya, G Vivek and former Deputy Speaker Damodara Rajanarsimha, who had nothing to do with Warangal, were trying for the seat and if the party picked up any of them, they would oppose the candidature.
A team of leaders and workers from Warangal are in Hyderabad and are trying to call on the TPCC president to discuss the issue. Meanwhile, one of the party activists alleged that there was a possibility that the party would give ticket to a candidate who could spend huge money running into crores. But party leadership from Warangal brushed aside the allegation.
