Hyderabad: The Telangana State government will offer cash incentives to women in an attempt to promote institutional deliveries. The government has taken a decision to implement the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) scheme to all the women, whether they belong to below poverty line (BPL) or above poverty line (APL) families.

The JSY scheme, sponsored by Union government, is intended to reduce the maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) by promoting the institutional deliveries by providing cash incentives. The government’s decision to offer cash incentives to all women, irrespective of their economic status, followed the complaints that the women from poor families were denied the benefit because they could not present the proof that they belonged to BPL families.

The scheme is offering Rs 1,000 incentive to each beneficiary in rural areas and Rs 6,000 in urban areas. The government distributed Rs 11.63 crore during 2014-15 under the scheme. Against the target of 1.8 lakh, 1.35 deliveries were covered under JSY scheme. The government spent Rs 4.27 crore up to June this year.
