Hyderabad: It is the touch-and-go situation for 10 to 20 patients waiting to undergo liver transplantation procedure in Osmania General Hospital (OGH). The situation has arisen because of the State government’s decision to relocate the Gastroenterology wing to some other hospital.

Patients with liver disease have thronged the OGH following the doctors in the hospital carrying out liver transplantation operation successfully. This has led to people reposing faith in the doctors in Gastroenterology wing. It has rekindled the hope among the people that they can now secure expert medical care in government hospital in the Telangana State on a par with the corporate hospital.

But the government’s decision to dismantle the OGH building to pave the way for building high-rise complex to provide better medical care to the poor has now caused anxious moments to patients suffering with liver ailments and their kin. The doctors are in dilemma whether to go ahead with surgery on the patients or wait till the Gastroenterology wing is relocated.

While patients numbering between 10 and 20 are patiently waiting to undergo transplantation, 100 more patients have registered their names with the Jeevandan programme to harvest organs from brain-dead. The Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao and the Minister for Health, C Lakshma Reddy, promised financial support for establishing modular theatre and intensive care unit (ICU) in OGH.

When contacted, the Health Minister said there arose no problem for performing surgery. He made it clear that the doctors at OGH would certainly perform the surgeries and would not betray the trust reposed in them by people.
