Hyderabad: Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao on Tuesday directed the officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and Hyderabad Metro Development Authority (HMDA) to set up enforcement force for safeguarding water bodies in the city and Rangareddy district.
The Minister held a high-level meeting with the officials of GHMC, HMDA, Rangareddy District Collector and Pollution Control Board officials to review the measures being taken to safeguard water bodies. Speaking at the meeting, Harish Rao directed the officials to ensure that restoration works on 34 lakes is completed on schedule.
He said the government had given administration sanction of Rs 64 crore for taking up works. The officials had called for tenders for restoration of 17 lakes so far. The Minister also asked the Irrigation and Revenue officials to mark full tank level of each and every lake.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner C V Anand stressed the need to preserve Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar. They were a lifeline to the State capital to ensure drinking water to citizens. He estimated that as much as Rs 37 crore was required for development of these reservoirs.
Harish Rao suggested pooling up of funds from GHMC and Irrigation Department as well as from Corporate and IT companies. He told Anand and Tejdeep Kaur Menon, Special Protection Force DG, to explore the possibility of film personalities conducting a benefit cricket match to collect funds for restoration of two reservoirs.
He also directed officials to put an end to mining at Ameenpur on the city outskirts in view of adverse impact on lake in the area. The SPF has adopted this lake and worked for its revival. Flamingoes and other rare species of birds are usually spotted in this Ameenpur lake. But increase of pollution levels was playing spoilsport, he said.
