Excise Commissioner vows to make entire State free from moonshine
Hyderabad: Sustained efforts put up by the officials of the State Excise and Prohibition Department have freed over 5,000 villages from the clutches of illicitly distilled (ID) liquor.
The officials of the Enforcement wing of the department pounded the liquor hideouts used by the hooch makers to rid the village from the perils of ID liquor. State Excise Commissioner R Chandravadan said the ID liquor had been completely eradicated in 5,629 villages spreading over 116 mandals in the State in the last three months.
The department had presented “best panchayat” awards to the villages which were freed from ID liquor consumption. Village Sarpanch, Revenue and police officials and other representatives were involved actively in the campaign against ID liquor.
The official said in the last two weeks alone 9,400 cases were booked against 40,860 persons involved in the illicit liquor trade. As many as 32 persons were also booked under Preventive Detention Act. Bind over cases were also booked against 7,300 persons.
As part of intensifying the campaign against ID liquor, the department was organising awareness programmes with the assistance of Gram Jyothi, Mahila Samakya . Rallies and Kalajathas were being held daily in the villages. A control Room was established to receive complaints.
The complaints were being recorded digitally and the they were being attended by the district officers concerned. So for, as many as 7,170 complaints were received.To improve coordination among the officials among the Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners and Excise Superintendent a ‘WhatsApp’ group was created for monitoring the liquor related crimes regularly.
A teleconference with Deputy Commissioners was being being conducted daily to coordinate activities and issue instructions to the staff. The officials would continue the drive to make Telangana State “an ID liquor free State” in the country very soon, Chandravadan said.
