Maripeda (Warangal): Upset over alleged ill-treatment inflicted on him by the police, a 21 year old degree student committed suicide late in the night on Thursday at Maripeda mandal headquarters in the district.

The student, Jinuka Krishna, committed suicide by jumping off a cell phone tower. The incident sparked high pitched protests by family members and the MRPS activists on Friday demanding action against the policemen.
It was said that two constables, Sambaiah and Srinivas, who were on a patrolling duty, asked a group of students gathered at the corner of a street to leave the place. Krishna reportedly got into an argument with the policemen.
The constables took the issue to notice of police Sub- Inspector Krishna Kumar. The Sub-Inspector ordered the constables to arrest the youth and to produce him before him. After the student was taken to the station, the Sub-Inspector allegedly beat him severally without allowing Krishna the chance to explain about the incident.
The student’s father Gouraiah and local sarpanch Ramlal rushed to the police station and urged the Sub-Inspector to release the youth but their pleas fell on the deaf ears. Finally he let the youth off after Gouraiah wrote a letter of apology to the SI on behalf of his son.
As soon as returning from the police station, Krishna ran to a cell phone tower in the village, shouting that he was going to commit suicide. He climbed the tower, jumped from it. He died instantly. Later, the SI and constables shifted the body to Mahabubabad Area Hospital.
The police tried to settle the issue “amicably” by negotiating with the student’s parents. But the MRPS activists and relatives protested and vowed to fight against the police “excesses.” The parents and activists staged protest on Warangal-Khammam Road by squatting.
Mahabubabad DSP Nagaraju and other senior police officials rushed to the spot and held talks with the protestors. The parents and MRPS leaders demanded immediate suspension of the SI and register a criminal case against him. The MRPS leaders demanded Rs 5 lakh ex gratia and a job to one of the family members. The DSP promised to take to the notice of his superiors the demands of the protesters. The rural SP AK Jha summoned the SI to police headquarters for an inquiry.
