Depleting groundwater levels, dried-up water sources cause concern

Hyderabad: Non-availability of water from the existing sources and fast depleting groundwater levels has resulted in imposing a major cut in water supply in various municipalities in Telangana. Some of the municipalities are getting water once in five days.

According to department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD), supply of drinking water on daily basis was being done only in 14 out of 67 municipalities in the state. Jangaon, Siricilla, Sattupally, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy , Siddipet , Gajwel and Metapally are among the municipalities supplied drinking water on daily basis.

Even in these municipalities, the quantity of water being supplied to each household has been reduced to 44 LPCD (Litres Per Capita per Day) from 100 LPCD. People living in 33 other ULBs have been receiving water once in two days. The rate of supply was only 8 LPCD to 56 LPCD depending on the availability of water from both surface and power bores.

Adilabad, Pupalpally, Bhainsa, Huzurnagar, Khammam, Medchal, Manuguru, Pedapally , Tandur and Vemualawada are among the municipalities where water is supplied once in two days. The municipalities where water is supplied once in three days are – Warangal, Jammikunta, Husnabad, Pedda Amberpet, Bhongir, Sadashivpet, Korutla, Nalgonda, Achampet, Ibrahimpatnam, Miryalaguda, Shadnagar, Wanaparthy and Yellandu.

The rate of water supply here is 5 LPCD to 49 LPCD. There has been reduction of more than 50 percent of water supply. In four municipalities (Devarakonda, Suryapet, Bellampally and Mahbubnagar), water is supplied once in a four days, where the supply is only 11 LPCD to 17 LPCD. The reduction of water supply in the urban areas was nearly 60 percent.

In another two ULBs (Badangpet and Mandamarri), water is supplied once in more than five days where the groundwater sources dried up very fast. The officials say that there has been steep fall in groundwater levels due to failure of monsoon this season. There has been reduction of 30 percent water supply in the last six months in 14 ULBs, they add.

The MAUD officials said the Irrigation Department has been requested to release water from rivers to fill the nearby tanks and surface water sources to meet the drinking water requirements. Arrangements are made for the supply of water from the Kakatiya Canal of the SRSP to Jagtial , Korutla and Metpalli municipalities.
