Hyderabad: Under Polio Endgame Strategy (UPES) the Telangana State government has decided to introduce Inactivated Polio Virus Vaccine (IPV) injection in March next year.

The IPV injection will be administered to the three-and-half month-old children along with third dose of Oral Poliovirus Vaccine (OPV) and Pentavalent 3rd dose. Further, children at the age of one year one more dose will be given.Speaking to The Hans India,

Dr G Srinivas Rao, Chief Programme Officer, National Health Mission, Telangana State, said the IPV was very expensive and cost of 10 dose vial under Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) is Rs 1500. Telangana State has been maintaining “Polio free status” for eight years and combined use of OPV and one dose of IPV would give best protection against polio, he said.

Regarding benefits of IPV Dr Srinivas said it would serve dual purpose of quickly boosting immunity to polio and preventing any possible polio outbreak. The polio virus was an extremely tenacious virus and can reemerge and reinfect if there was any complacency in adminstering polio vaccination, he said.

On the part of safety, he said it had been used for the past many years by the private doctors in India. No serious adverse effects had been reported in administering the vaccine, whether used along or in combination with other vaccines.

Dr Srinivas said, “As many as 27,055 booths will be operated in all cities, towns, villages, habitations and in major transit places like bus stand, railway stations to cover nearly 43 lakh children in the age group of 0-5 years.” The World Health Organisation (WHO) is providing technical expertise in the development of plans for IPV introduction at national and state levels.
