Hyderabad: Commissioner, I&PR department, Navin Mittal assured modernisation of the department for help strengthening the relationship with media. He welcomed close coordination with media for ‘upgrading’ knowledge base by conducting different programmes.

The senior IAS officer interacted with media first time after taking charge as Commission of I&PR department at the invitation of Press Club, Somajiguda here on Tuesday. He found that the journalists, who were important part of society, should upgrade themselves like the doctors, who have Continued Medical Education (CME) to maintain, develop or increase the knowledge, skills and professional performance and relationships. He said, for this, his department was open to design programme and jointly work together.

While explaining the importance of social media and the speed with which it reaches the targeted groups or persons, he said recently even I&PR officials has adopted the technology. “Social media is a huge platform. At first no one was updating on WhatsApp, but slowly news started coming even from rural places. It’s a simple initiative, but a powerful tool,” he said.

Health cards to scribes soon

Meanwhile, he promised to expedite the process of issuing health cards to journalists as promised by the Government, and in the first phase all the accredited journalists would be covered followed by other journalists. He said more than 23,000 applications were submitted for obtaining health cards and it would take lot of time to verify the authenticity of the applications.

So in the first phase, cards would be issued to all the accredited journalists since their credentials were already verified. He, however, made it clear that all the journalists would be covered under the scheme as promised by the Government following the norms laid down for the purpose. Mittal said the department was suffering from shortage of staff after bifurcation and this was leading to delay in taking decision on journalists’ issues.

He wished that image of the department as an ‘advertising department’ should be wiped off, and sought suggestions from journalists to make the relations between the media and I&PR stronger. He said he would look into the awards given to journalists in the combined State and how they could be revived. Press Club president R Ravikanth Reddy presided and introduced Mittal to the journalists. Club Secretary Rajamouli Chary, Vice-President C Vanaja, Treasurer PV Srinivas and Executive members Raghu Duggu and Krishna were also present.
