Not even in its wildest dreams, would the TRS have ever dreamt of scripting such a resounding win in the by-election to the Warangal Lok Sabha seat which, in fact, was the seventh biggest margin in the annals of Parliament history.
Warangal: Not even in its wildest dreams, would the TRS have ever dreamt of scripting such a resounding win in the by-election to the Warangal Lok Sabha seat which, in fact, was the seventh biggest margin in the annals of Parliament history.
Surpassing all the expectations on its way, the ruling party proved its sway over state politics, despite facing a tempest of criticism from the Opposition that it had underperformed in its 18-month rule. TRS candidate Pasunuri Dayakar trounced his nearest rival Congress’ Sarve Satyanarayana by 4,59,092 votes eclipsing the previous record set by his predecessor Kadiyam Srihari in 2014 elections.
Right through the 22 rounds of the counting which took place on the premises of Enumamula Market Yard here on Tuesday, both the Congress and the BJP-Telugu Desam combine occupied second and third positions, respectively.
But for the cheery start wherein it took all the four postal ballots announced at the start of the counting, the Congress never looked like that it was in the contest. For that matter no other party as well. The voting pattern constituency-wise dispelled all the doubts of anti-establishment as people not only reposed their faith in the TRS but also presented a handsome majority, said to be the seventh highest in the Lok Sabha history. The results showed that even in the TDP constituencies, a majority of voters preferred TRS.
Contesting for the first time, Dayakar, a Fine Arts graduate, made all the records tumble while ensuring all the candidates, including the Congress and the BJP candidates, lose their security deposits like the 2014 election.
While, Dayakar got a whopping 6,15,403 votes, the Congress’ Sarve Satyanarayana and BJP’s Pagidipati Devaiah registered 1,56,311 and 1,30,178, respectively, out of a total 10,34,840 votes polled. By capturing 59.46 per cent of polled votes, the TRS broke its own record of 56 per cent set by Kadiyam Srihari. Meanwhile, Jajula Bhaskar of a little-known Sramajeevi Party sprang a huge surprise by securing the fourth place in the by-poll with 28,541 votes.
His tally is more than that of YSR Congress Nalla Suryaprakash’s 23,352 votes and the Left Parties-backed independent candidate Prof Gali Vinod Kumar’s 14,788 votes. Meanwhile, by pressing ‘NOTA’ button, as many as 7,753 voters turned down all the 23 candidates in the fray.
Though the BJP candidate had polled 39,457 votes in the Palakurthy Assembly segment, being represented by its ally TDP’s Errabelli Dayakar Rao, the TRS took a major share with 75,261 votes in a total of 1,53,194 polled votes. The voters in the Parkal Assembly segment, which was also clinched by the TDP, also preferred TRS by giving a highest majority 97,817 among all seven constituencies under the Lok Sabha seat. A contest within the contest The other interesting element that the people across the state were keenly observing was the majority numbers of Warangal East and Warangal West constituencies as poll campaign in these two segments was manoeuvred by – T Harish Rao and K Taraka Rama Rao.
Contrary to the pre-poll expectations, the TRS got 90,909 votes in a total of 1,33,128 in East segment with a percentage of 68.28 much higher than West segment which registered 64.81 per cent.
