Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Labour Bandaru Dattatreya laid foundation stone for a 100-bedded ESI super specialty hospital at Seetharambagh in Goshamahal Assembly constituency here on Saturday.

The function was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy, BJP MLA Raja Singh, ESIC Commissioner Dr R K Kataria, former MLAs Prem Singh Rathore and Ramaswamy and senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Dattatreya said instead of constructing ESI dispensary on available three acres of land, the Central government was establishing a 100-bedded hospital at a cost of Rs. 100 crore. Besides having emergency services, the hospital would cater to the need of specialties like cardiology and kidney ailments. He said the hospital would serve the labour classes hailing from Goshamahal, Nampally, Karwan, Dabeerpura, Yakutpura, Katedan, Shamshabad, Chappal Bazaar and other areas of the old city.

The Union Minister said the hospital was expected to provide treatment to nearly five lakh people annually as the new facility was being constructed for more than one lakh insured persons. He said presently 11 ESI dispensaries were functioning across the city.

All of them would be upgraded to 10-bedded hospitals soon. He said that the Central government would construct a new hospital building if the State government provided land for the same. He assured that the workers of unorganised sector too would be provided with ESI benefits in a phased manner. On a pilot basis, the facility is being provided to autorickshaw drivers, cycle-rickshaw pullers and construction labourers of Hyderabad and Delhi.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the ESI Hospital when several TRS activists raised slogans against the organisers for not inviting the ruling party leaders for the event.

Immediately after the end of the inaugural ceremony, TRS workers, led by M Prakash, tried to gherao the Minister while accusing the BJP of turning the event into a party function. They raised slogans like ‘Jai Telangana’ and ‘KCR Zindabad’ and condemned the organisers for inviting former BJP MLAs while ignoring the ruling TRS leaders.

They also criticised the organisers for not installing the picture of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao at the venue. The TRS workers did not listen to the appeals for calm made by Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali and Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, who were present on the dais.

Tension escalated when the BJP workers, who were present in large numbers, raised counter slogans. The situation turned normal only after the intervention of the police.
