Hyderabad: The Sultan Bazar traders have come to terms with imminent displacement of their business as State government has given go-ahead to Metro Rail authorities to build elevated railroad in the areas. With this, the agitation being organised by the traders for the last four years against the Metro Rail corridor going through Sultan Bazar came to an abrupt end. The Telangana State government has agreed to pay compensation to the traders.

In the words of KTR, “Sultan Bazar traders will be given the best compensation.” But the “best compensation” is yet to be defined. As per the new Land Acquisition Act, twice the market value is awarded to the displaced as compensation. Would the traders be given compensation greater than the one envisaged by the New Land Acquisition Act? The officials have yet to clarify this aspect.

In all the stretches of metro project the road width is at 100 ft but in the case of Sultan Bazaar it has been decided to reduce the width considerably. In the main street between Bata showroom to Andhra Bank in Sultan Bazaar it would be 65 ft and the roads connecting Sultan Bazaar to be 80 ft. A trader on condition of anonymity said, “The Metro Rail authorities feel that by keeping the width to 65 ft they are compensating the traders.”

According to HMR officials, compensation should not always be measured in terms of money. Special measures are being taken such as providing noise barriers on the viaduct to ensure that the traders can continue with their business as usual. The reduction in road width would benefit the traders.

During the construction, the traders would be rehabilitated in a complex constructed at Osmania Medical College. A senior official of HMR said that normally such a facility is not given. It is said that a majority of the traders, especially property owners have accepted the offer.
