Provide basic facilities to workers, brick kiln unit owners told

Karimnagar: With the Supreme Court’s intervention into the death of a four-month pregnant worker Surja Bag, who was kicked in the stomach by the owner of a brick kiln unit in Hanumanthunipeta village in the district on December 1, the district administration acted swiftly and stalled the activities in the brick kiln units in the district.

While the administration has refused to open units till the basic facilities were provided to migrant labourers, owners of the units sought some time to make arrangements.

The Apex Court has taken suo-moto the alleged murder of Surja Bag and directed the united Andhra Pradesh High Court to go into the details about the living conditions of labourers in brick kiln units. Based on the Supreme Court’s directive, the High Court asked the State government to submit a detailed report by December 21. As part of its preparatory process, the district administration on Saturday organised a meeting with the owners of bricks manufacturing units and representatives of NGOs to create awareness among them.

The officials told the owners not to open the units till all the basic facilities were provided. The officials also told them to pay daily wages. At the meeting, it has also been decided to form mandal-level committees along with the local Tahsildar, SI, Anganwadi Supervisor, one representative from Education, Medical and Health, Labour departments and NGOs and three representatives from the brick kiln units.

District Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad said that the brick kiln owners have been left with no other option except providing all facilities and threatened to take legal action against owners and cancel their licenses if they failed to do so.
