Hyderabad: The Telangana government has hastened the process for implementation of the mandatory fitment of speed governors in certain categories of vehicles in the state.

The government on Saturday constituted a three-member official committee headed by the state Principal Secretary to Transport, Roads and Buildings for selecting the bidders to supply the speed governors. The other two members of the committee are –Transport Commissioner and Telangana State Technology Services (TSTS) Managing Director.

Government made it mandatory for transport vehicles including school buses to be fitted with speed governors by April 1, 2016. The speed governors will restrict vehicles like school buses at 60 kmph and transport buses/ vehicles at 80 kmph. Transport vehicles manufactured on or after October 1, 2015 shall be equipped or fitted with speed governors by the vehicle manufacturers either during the manufacturing stage or at the dealership stage.

For vehicles registered before October 1, 2015, operators themselves have to install speed governors before the deadline. The officials said that two and three wheelers and four-wheel vehicles used for carrying passengers and goods, with seating capacity not exceeding eight passengers and not more than 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight, ambulances, police vehicles and fire tenders have been exempted from installing speed governors.
