TDP to adopt IVRS for selection of candidates

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which had set a new trend in the selection of candidates for Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies through IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) in 2014 elections, will adopt the same technique in finalising the party candidates in the ensuing Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election to be held in January.

Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which had set a new trend in the selection of candidates for Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies through IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) in 2014 elections, will adopt the same technique in finalising the party candidates in the ensuing Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election to be held in January.

The TDP yielded good results from the IVRS by securing majority Assembly and Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh. However, the party bit the dust in Telangana in the last general elections. The party identified 80 wards of the total 150 as stronghold in Greater Hyderabad limits.

Though the allocation of wards between the TDP and its ally BJP is yet to begin, the selection of candidates has already been initiated in the areas where the party has more winning prospects.

Party’s GHMC wing leaders said the party had been maintaining strong cadre network in the wards which came under the purview of Kukatpally, Ibrahimpatnam, Serlingampalli, Malkajigiri, Jubilee Hills, Secunderabad and Sanathnagar Assembly constituencies. Interestingly, MLAs elected from the TDP in majority of the above mentioned Assembly segments switched loyalties to the TRS recently.

Leaders in the wards are making beeline to the party head office, NTR Trust Bhavan, to claim their stake and also lobbying strongly for the party tickets. In view of the growing demand for TDP tickets, party leadership has decided to field only winning candidates.

Under the instruction of the party National Committee General Secretary N Lokesh, the selection will be done through IVRS by seeking the opinion of local cadre and voters. “Views of the cadre and random surveys will be taken into consideration before finalising the names. This kind of selection will definitely enhance the success rate of the party in the civic body elections,” a senior TDP leader said.
