Hyderabad: “Counselling may not completely de-radicalise the persons who are inclined towards Jihadist ideology,” said City Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy on Monday. The youngsters, Mohd Abdullah Basith (20), Syed Omer Farooq Hussaini (22) and Maaz Hasan Farooq (22), all cousins, who attempted to leave for Syria via Srinagar, were arrested by the city police on Monday. They were remanded in 14 day judicial custody.

  • Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy, however, says the cops continue to counsel the youths inclined towards terrorist ideology
  • He says when 100 youths are counselled, two per cent of them may go astray

Cases were registered against them under section 121 (of waging, or attempting to wage war, or abetting waging of war, against the government), 121-A (conspiracy to wage war against government), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and also under relevant sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Three students were picked up by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad from Nagpur airport three days ago while they were on their way to Srinagar from Nagpur to Islamic State terror group.

Answering a query at a press meet on Monday, the Police Commissioner said “Counselling may not deter radicalisation completely and there was no guarantee that counselling would deter some from fall prey to the terrorist group at the later date. If 100 persons are counselled, only two percent among them may go astray.”

Mahender Reddy said that the Abdullah Basith and Maaz Hasan were under police scanner since they were detained from Kolkata. After counselling them in the presence of their parents, their activities were tracked. The counselling had yielded results as their parents reported to the police on their sons absconding from their homes.

Two of the detained youngsters, Abdul Basith alias Musaib and Maaz Hasan were earlier detained by the city police from a lodging hosue in Kolkata on a tip-off from the Intelligence agencies that the duo along with two others Abrar and Noman were planning to leave for Syria via Bangladesh and Turkey.

The police said that Basith and Maaz were nephews of former Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) president late Syed Salahuddin. Upon their arrest, the police recovered a tab from Basith’s house, three Indigo Air Tickets from Nagpur to Srinagar, Rs 20,000 out of Rs 90,000 which Basith has stolen and a note which he left for his parents at the house.
