Hyderabad: The notification inviting applications for vice-chancellor posts in the state-run universities has evoked huge response from the teachers’ community. As many as 450 applications were received by the Telangana government till the last count on Monday. Not just from the teacher fraternity, the government has also received applications from the senior scientists working in the research organisations like National Institution of Nutrition, Centre for Cellular and Molecular and among other research institutes in the State.

The huge response was due to the fact that the government had reduced the work experience of professor from 10 years to five years to be appointed as vice-vhancellor (VC). As per the University Grants Commission (UGC), to be eligible for the post of VC, a candidate should have minimum 10 years experience as a professor in a university system or in an equivalent position in a reputed research or academic administrative organisation.

Though the government had adopted the guidelines, it had revised norms and issued an order recently reducing the minimum work experience as professor from 10 years to five years. This decision of the government has benefited a large teacher community in the universities. For an instance, Osmania University had nearly 40 professors with 10 year experience.

Now with the reducing the minimum experience to five years, close to 200 professors became eligible. Similar is the case with the Telugu University and state run universities. With three more days left for deadline to submit applications, officials in the higher education department said that the number of applications might increase on the last day.

Meanwhile, the Telangana State Federation of University Teachers Associations (TSFUTA) moved the Hyderabad High Court over reducing the minimum work experience to five years. Teachers opine that government’s move was against the UGC’s regulations which mandate a minimum of 10 years experience as a professor to be eligible for VC post.

“The UGC had framed guidelines by consulting all stake-holders across the country. The guidelines are already adopted by the Telangana government and they cannot amend once it is adopted. The government has violated the UGC guidelines,” said Prof. Battu Satyanarayana, President, Telangana State Federation of University Teachers Associations. The case will come up for hearing on Tuesday.
