Hyderabad: Telangana State government is going to launch Nutritional Health Track System (NHTS) to monitor the health condition of pregnant women and nursing mothers, besides children by linking Aadhar Card with Anganwadi Centers (AWC) across the State.

According to Women Development and Child Welfare (WDCW) Department officials, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is 39 per every 1,000 live births, while the national average is 40.

Regarding Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), the number of mothers who die during or just after childbirth per 1, 00,000 live births is 92 and national average is 167. The percentage of incidence of anaemia among women is 57 per cent and 61.9 per cent among the pregnant women.

Speaking to The Hans India, M Prashanti, Deputy Secretary, Women Development and Child Welfare, said the objective of NHTS was to track every pregnant, nursing mother and children to monitor the improvement in nutritional status in terms of weight gain and reduction of low birth weight. The first two years in the life of child would determine its development of physical and mental faculties. She said, “The tracking system helps in two ways.

It will find out whether the data is being properly maintained and the places where the services are not reaching. This will help the government in identifying the vulnerable pockets and start new intervention or improve the action. Around Rs 3 crore has been spent for the dedicated server for the tracking system. In next phase thumb impression on a biometric machine will be installed at every AWC,” she added.

Dr Lakshmi Bhavani, Nutrition Consultant, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), said the institution was providing technical support and had developed the software for NHTS and was also giving training to the Child Development Project Officers (CDPO) and other filed staff. The tracking would put a check on the irregularities at the AWCs.

This would help in effective implementation of Arogya Laxmi scheme which is being implemented and is meant to reduce the incidence of infant mortality and maternal mortality. The main objective of this programme is to reduce the incidence of anaemia among the pregnant women and nursing mothers and low birth weight babies, besides malnutrition among the children.

Arogya Laxmi is being implemented in 35,655 AWCs in Telangana State. Under the programme 16 eggs a month are provided to the children in the age group of seven months to three years.

Along with eggs, wheat, milk powder, red gram, sugar and oil are provided every month. Children between the age group of three years to six years are provided daily one egg, rice, dal, curries and snacks.

The pregnant women are given full meals for 25 days with eggs and 200 ml milk. The programme is aimed at providing nutritious food to 5.90 lakh pregnant and nursing mothers, apart from 18.20 lakh children, according to official data.
