Bhadrachalam: Education is a must for the people from oppressed classes in order to overcome their present situation, said the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Education Institutions Society Secretary R S Praveen Kumar. Addressing the leaders of Dalit groups here on Sunday, he emphasized the role education could play in achieving social mobility and attributed his rise to the present position from a poor family to the constitutional opportunities provided by Dr. B R Ambedkar.

He exhorted the leaders to encourage their children to reach great heights in their careers. Referring to the unfortunate gap in the educational standards between urban and rural students, he asked them to encourage their wards to perform to the hilt. “There is no other way and there is no better way than excelling in our studies and prove our mettle,” he maintained. He urged the Dalits to display the images of Ambedkar and Savitribai Phule in their homes.

The event was organised as part of the preparations for the month-long celebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti, which will start on March 14.
The Dalit groups submitted a memorandum to the Secretary highlighting their demands. They sought a special financial package for the landless SCs and STs in Agency areas as it was not feasible to distribute them three acres per head. Dalit leaders Mudda Pichchayya, Gurajala Venkateswarlu, Bhupelli Narsimha Rao and others called on the Secretary.
