Nizamabad: The Telangana Beedi Workers Union conducted a huge protest rally in the town on Wednesday under the aegis of AITUC against the notification of Union Health Ministry of enlarging the danger symbol (throat cancer symbol) by 85 % on the beedi rolls. They said that such a step would adversely affect the sales of beedis and hits the beedi manufacturing industry hard.

Large number of beedi workers working in various organizations conducted the rally from the Gandhi chowk to the Nizamabad Tahsildar’s office passing through the TSRTC bus stand, railway station, Collectorate and the RDO Office. More than 2,000 beedi, workers and beedi factory owners took part in the rally.

Addressing the gathering, Vanamala Krishna, State Telangana Beedi Workers Union president and AITUC said that the Union government was gradually destroying the beedi industry with its new rules and regulations, which would ultimately result in the shutdown of the beedi industry in India. He said that the Union Health Ministry already implementing 45% space with danger symbols, on beedi rolls, but now the ministry issued GO 727 increasing the throat cancer symbol space by 85%.

Krishna said that nearly 1.5 crore people were dependent on the beedi industry in India and if this new rule was implemented, it would sound the death knell of the beedi industry. They should provide alternative sources of livelihood to the beedi workers and labourers and only then, implement these norms, Krishna added.

Later, the beedi workers submitted a memorandum to the Nizamabad Tahsildar Rajender to remove these symbols on beedi rolls and protect the beedi industry. New Democracy leader Prabhakar, PYL leader Godavari, PDSU leader Sudhakar and trade union leaders belonging to various leftist parties were present.
