New Delhi: The Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Bandaru Dattatreya here on Monday urged the Union Minister for Water Resources, Uma Bharati to declare the Kaleswaram Project as a national project as it would benefit Telangana immensely.

Pointing out that at least 1,600 tmc of water gets wasted from the river to sea every year, he said that the Kaleswaram project would help in storing 350 tmc of water. The downstream of the project which spans of 90 lakh acres of land can be irrigated through minor dams besides meeting the drinking water needs, he added.

Later addressing the media, the Minister disclosed that Bharati had agreed to depute a team of experts to assess the usefulness of Kaleswaram project soon and seek a report from them. Aiming for a firsthand knowledge of the irrigation projects in the State, she also promised to visit here before the onset of the second half of the Budget session.
