World Water Day was observed across the district on Tuesday focusing on the current year’s theme ‘Better water-Better jobs’. Various governmental, non-governmental and educational institutions participated in the celebrations which began on March 22, 1993 following a recommendation in 1992 by United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

A programme was held at the Collectorate where the in-charge Collector Prashanth J Patil administered a pledge on water conservation. In view of depleting ground water table and growing population, water scarcity could become a serious issue by 2025. Hence, everyone has to act to conserve water, he added.
The State government in order to address the water scarcity has initiated programmes like Mission Kakatiya and Mission Bhagiratha. The residents in the urban and rural areas have to dig soak pits and rainwater harvesting pits in their houses, he added. DRO K Shoba, RWS SE Ramulu Naik, Water Grid SE Yesurathnam and others were present.
In another programme, the town based NGO, Bala Vikasa has organised a massive rally from the Public Gardens to the Collectorate where a human chain was formed and took a pledge for water conservation. Bala Vikasa training centre manager S Sunita, programme officer Pratap Reddy, Italy national Francisca, large number of students and Jala Vikasa volunteers participated in the rally displaying placards on the importance of saving water for future generations.
At Mahabubabad, the Disha Social Service Organization founder V Gurunatha Rao released an educational poster aimed at spreading awareness among people on water conservation and calling upon the people to take action and to change things. At the AVV Junior College, a seminar was held where an environmentalist Thakur Rathan Singh, NSS coordinator K Srinivasa Rao, the Colleges Secretary Ch Vijay Kumar, faculty member Barupati Gopi and others told the students to take up water conservation measures.
Warangal DFO (wildlife) K Purushotham, speaking at a programme organised by Abhyudaya Seva Samithi and Government Urban Health Centre advised the residents in the city to construct water harvesting pits to harvest rainwater. The samithi president M Parashuramulu was present.
At the World Water Day seminar at KITS-W, the KITS Director Y Manohar urged the students to focus their attention on the importance of sustainable management of freshwater resources and make use technology for the purpose.
